Purpose Engineers Limited was bought in 1965 for £9,000 from Mr McPHAIL. Mr Mc PHAIL was a client of Dick KITCHING a solicitor. Pete WILLIAMS, who was a good friend of Dick KITCHING, was working with Dick DELVES and Pete LEATHLEY at Rolls Royce. KITCHING organised the sale. WILLIAMS and LEATHLEY borrowed their share from Dorthy GIBSON and her friend Wyn JONES a jeweller.
The company purchase included the building in Little Eaton a staff of ten men and tooling machines. Mr McPHAIL used the money to buy boat and run cruises up the River Dart in Devon. Mr McPHAIL had named the business PEL after buying 'FD Roe' from two brothers.
Dad had only just rejoined Rolls Royce after a break of four years working for Mintex in Yorkshire. He had returned to RR after marrying mother, she had refused to go any further North!
Soon after buying Purpose Engineers the four partners employed Fred HANSON who enabled them to set up in 'Lost Wax Pattern Dies'. He had learnt the trade from working at H&F Precision Castings on Ascot Drive. The firm had been started by two dentists who used their lost wax skills to make turbine blades for Rolls Royce.
Business boomed for PEL between 1965-71 and Dad employed two designers but they nearly hit the rocks when RR went into liquidation in 1971. They adapted by working for the nuclear part of Rolls Royce and Associates.
A number of staff advanced on to greater things. Ken EGLETON later became a director of Abro Fab which is still going. Purpose Engineers received a large grant to move the business to Heanor in 1980.

NSOA Winners
There will not be many Squib owners who have been members of NSOA longer than me. I have been a member since 1972. I collected number 388 from Oliver Lee in person. Subsequent, having realised that the early boats took off the starting line slightly more quickly than mine, I bought 'Crimson Dusk', number 30, from a farmer in Burnham. Hopefully she will sail in Abersoch this summer. I have not yet ruled out the possibility of sailing in Cowes in August at the 50th anniversary championship celebrations.
The purpose of this missive is to advise you of the victory of Burwain Sailing Club in the Wilson Trophy team race championship in1970 at West Kirby Wirral. All 3 Helmsmen became Squib Owner‘s in subsequent years, and Nigel Harris won the squib championships at Abersoch in 2000, whilst Roger Harris, had been Firefly National Champion in 1970. Roger also won the inland water championship in Merlin Rockets. For my part I can not claim any individual victories. Pete Richards, who I note is the Chairman of The Squib Championship Committee, was a member of the Burwain team at the Wilson in 1970 ,and he crewed for me at that event, in Fireflies, and he crewed regularly or me, in a Squib for nigh on 30 year’s, before he deserted
me for a younger man, namely David Best. Pete crewed, also, for Roger Harris in A 470 and they were members of the RYA Olympic squad in, I think 1976,
They were runners up for selection to the Olympics, the UK being represented by Phil Crebbin, who, I believe finished 6th.
