A short history of Springfield Mill, Maidstone.
William Balston set up a new papermaking factory in 1805 called Springfield Mill. It was named after the numerous chalk springs at the site which fed the river Medway. The new mill was designed using the latest technologies available which included steam power and an on-site laboratory.

Balston had previously been in partnership with the brothers Thomas, Robert and Finch Hollingworth and together they had bought the world famous ‘J Whatman’ papermaking business.
James Whatman had started manufacturing paper in 1733 on the river Len at Pole Mill in Boxley. He later moved the main production to Turkey Mill where James his son developed the technique of 'wove' and paper whitening processes using bleach.
Turkey Mill and Springfield Mill, although now competitors, both had the copy rights to manufacture and sell 'J Whatman' papers which continued to have tremendous international prestige.
William Balston's two sons bought the 'Turkey Mill' version of the watermark in 1859.
