Chronical of the SPEEDING Family.
Eliza SPEEDING married John CLARKE on the 30th March 1840
at the Parish Church, Frinsbury, Rochester, Eliza's father's
name is given as James and his profession a 'carpenter'.
Eliza's birth is uncertain. It is given as 15th July 1815
in the CLARKE family Bible but as 13th July 1816 in the
baptism register of St Mary's parish Church, St Leonard,
Bromley.
Eliza had two younger brothers William born on the 22nd
April 1818 and Henry born in 1820. (Unfortunately I have
lost the references but assume William's birth date must
have come from the baptism register.)
I have no marriage date for Eliza's parents James &
Mary SPEEDING. There is a death record of Mary SPEEDING
aged 35 years, whose abode was Poplar and who was buried
on the 27th of March. There is an account in the 'Burials
in the Ground of the Honourable East India Company at
Poplar' of a payment of 2 shillings for someone to ring
a bell at the funeral. |

Random Notes (need sorting)
I have spent all afternoon trying to fathom out where
Sarah Wrenn fits in and have found a birth (26 Sept 1805)
baptism (16 Oct 1805) of a Sarah Wrenn to a David Wrenn
and Sarah Speeding at St Nicholas, Liverpool.
I have Sarah Wrenn in my records as having been born c.1806
outside County (taken from 1841 Census for London) so
I think this must be the same person.
I think David Wrenn died soon after his marriage to Sarah
Speeding and she then married Simon Knight and had another
3 daughters (Sybella, Marianne and Jane) all of whom remained
single.
Briefly reading William Speeding's Will I get the impression
that the Sarah that he married was also a Speeding - what
do you think?
There was a newspaper cutting in the '1809_Family Register'
page of the 'CLARK Family Bible' which is now owned by
my Uncle Charles GIBSON who lives in Hampshire.
There is a mention of grand-daughter Sarah Wrenn in Sarah
SPEEDING's will of 1820 - I attach a Word Document of
its transcription.
This is an interesting document because she makes a codicil
revoking my ancestor, her son, James SPEEDING to the benefit
of Simon Knight who may or may not be Sarah WRENN's father.
I have found a marriage between Sarah WRENN and Simon
KNIGHT 14th Jul 1815 on the IGI
Simon Knight is mentioned in Sarah SPEEDING's will
I am a bit confused about Sarah SPEEDING, in William SPEEDING's
1812_Will he mentions his wife as 'I give, devise and
bequeath unto my dear reputed wife, now living with me,
Sarah Speeding daughter of James Speeding formerly of
Northwood in the county of Essex, [20] labourer all that
. .'
SPEEDING is a very unusual name and I think from reading
between the lines that they were probably were related
but had had their children with different partners!
I speculate that Sarah may have been married before to
WRENN? and had children Sarah and James?
The family lived in Emmett Street for a while, then Pennyfields.
I don't know whether you know that round the corner from
Emmett Street was a Bowley Street which took its name
from James Bowley who was quite a prominent shipbuilder
in the area.
Unfortunately by the time I went to London to find Bowley
Street it had disappeared underneath one of the new roads
that was built there.
