The Slinger Motorcycle was made in 1901, by William Slinger, an electrical engineer from Settle, in Yorkshire, who took six years to complete the project.

It was very peculiar looking three-wheeler with all three wheels in line. The rear of the machine appeared much as a conventional bicycle, whereas at the front the normal wheel and forks were replaced by a small motorcycle with two small wheels and a De Dion engine between them. The engine was water-cooled with the radiator surrounding the cylinder. It had a surface carburettor and coil ignition. Transmission was by chain to a countershaft and then by a second chain to the rear small wheel. For steering it had braced forks to the front assembly, and further linkage for turning the front wheel. Forward motion was relatively easy but reverse was similar to backing a car with a trailer attached.

1597_Genealogy_of_the_ELLISES.pdf
Written on the cover page of the "Genealogy of the Ellises":-
"This family has been seated in the hundred of Ouse & Derwent & Howdenshire at least since the time of Q. Elizabeth and is in all probability descended from Matthew Ellis of Balkholme 1597
Based on a compilation by Alfred Shelley Ellis made in 1870"

Alongside his Esparanto interests my great-grandfather John ELLIS also followed  a single name genealogical research group mapping the ELLIS family. The group published books called 'Notices of the Ellises'. These were published by Mitchel and Hughes 140 Wardour Street London. The fourth and last supplement was printed in 1881. My uncle John DELVES gave me the supplements 'three' and 'four' along with a huge hand-written family tree probably drafted by John ELLIS. In the late 1990's I attended the Mormon family history research centre in West Bridgeford, Nottingham. The facilities were available to non-members and were run by very knowledgeable ladies. One of the ladies there was so enthusiastic about the huge 'Genealogy of the Ellises' that I gave it to her after which she photocopied the half that was applicable to my direct family line. The original is likley to be stored in the Nottingham Morman archives.
